Most children (and adults) think of summer as a time to take a break from learning, and I fall into that category as well. I don’t want to think about schoolwork, or helping my kids with their homework, so we think we can just turn our brains off. That doesn’t quite work though. Our brains require stimulation, so we try to find some fun ways to keep our minds engaged in the summertime by visiting places with free admission!
We have a huge luxury in Minnesota with the amount of museums and history attractions at our fingertips. So, get out of the house this summer and enjoy a day at a museum! Did I mention they are FREE?! The kids will love going on the adventure, plus they will learn while they are there. And I guarantee that you will not be bored either.
Here is a list of museums and historical attractions that always offer FREE admission:
- Weisman Art Museum (Minneapolis, MN)
- Sculpture Gardens (Minneapolis, MN)
- Minnesota Air National Guard Museum (St. Paul, MN) – Require a $5 donation per person. Check out other requirements on their website.
- Como Zoo & Conservatory (St Paul, MN)
- Museum of Russian Art (Minneapolis, MN)- children 13 and under FREE, Adult admission $9
These museums offer free admission on certain days each month:
- The Walker Art Center has Target Free Admission on Thursday evenings from 5 – 9pm, and Free First Saturdays of every month.
- If you are a Bank of America or Merril Lynch credit or debit card holder, you could get free admission into select museums and science centers on the first full weekend of every month – just by presenting your card and a photo ID. The MN options are Mill City Museum, Minnesota History Center, Historic Fort Snelling, and the James J. Hill House.
Rain or shine, these centers will be open.
Which museum sounds interesting to you?

I have fond memories of visiting both the Sculpture Gardens and Como Zoo when I went to college up in Minnesota. Another group that thankfully also can often get free admission: the military. During the summer, if you are active military, many museums throughout the nation are “Blue Star” museums which let military in for free. This program happens through Labor Day.
