“The Lorax” … a Children’s Movie with an Environmental Message
The Dr. Seuss movie “The Lorax” came out on March 2nd. This book was considered to be one of Dr. Seuss’ more environmental books, as it teaches kids to care about nature and not as much about material things.
This story’s message is well translated into the movie. This movie provides an opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about environmental care and the importance of it. It also brings the idea that material goods are necessary, but do not necessarily provide happiness. This will be a movie that you can enjoy with your kids and have some great conversations afterwards.
Here are a few ideas of what you can talk with your kids about after seeing the movie:
- Talk to your kids about environmental practices you do in the home and why you do them
- Ask them if they can think of any new ways to be more environmentally friendly in their life or in your home
- Ask what their favorite part of the earth is to protect: the ocean, trees, rainforest, mountains, birds, tigers etc. After they answer, think of a way in which your family together can help protect this.
- Have your kids commit to a new habit of their choosing to help protect the environment
Here are a few other children’s movies that have environmental messages in them:
- Happy Feet 2
- Over the Hedge
This is a fun way to spend time with your kids while teaching them a lesson about the environment.
