Dining out takes on a whole new dimension when you have to navigate gluten-free options, especially if you’re in a new city! Sure there’s always something that they will SAY you can eat, but there really is a limit to how many salads, bun-less hamburgers and plates of risotto that one person can stomach, and then there is always the concern that it could have been contaminated by gluten in the kitchen.
Thankfully, there is an app that will help. The developer behind Find Me Gluten Free believes that gluten-free people should be able to eat safely and comfortably, whether they are traveling, socializing, or just need a quick bite to eat. The app is location based, so wherever you are, you can click the “go” button and find restaurants with gluten-free options in your area.
The app includes a link to the restaurant’s menu, directions and a link to call. I always call to confirm that yes, the restaurant is still in business, that they do still make gluten-free options, and that they understand cross contamination and know how to avoid it. Many restaurants have been reviewed by other gluten-free diners, so you can get a fairly good idea of what to expect. Some restaurants even allow you to make reservations right from the app.
As always, when you are ordering, make sure you let your server know that you are gluten-free, and make sure the know if it is an actual gluten allergy.
I’ve found some great places using this app that I never would have found without it. We took a trip to California for a family wedding last fall, and it was great to find all of the gluten free grocery stores, restaurants, and bakeries close to our hotel. It made the trip a lot easier and more enjoyable! Find Me Gluten Free is available in the app store, on google play and online here. I hope it helps you like it has helped us!
