In America, we take for granted the quality of our drinking water. Did you know, according to The Water Project, “1 in 9 people world wide do not have access to safe and clean drinking water.” We don’t have to walk several miles to draw just a bucket of water. We can turn on many different faucets in our home and receive clean water. In so many countries, people must rely on bottled water to stay safely hydrated. In the U.S., we don’t have to purchase bottles of water to keep ourselves healthy. For this, I am so grateful and blessed! However, I still want to be conscious of what is in my water. Obviously, our body needs water to live and function well so I want to be sure that what I am drinking is pure and in the best interest for my health.
On a large scale, we receive water that is clean and does not pose an immediate risk to our health. There are other pollutants in our water though that are potential carcinogens. According to the New York Times, “Only 91 contaminants are regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, yet more than 60,000 chemicals are used within the United States, according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates” (2009). For example, Chlorine is used in the U.S. in small amounts to disinfect our water. On a large scale, disinfected water is wonderful. However, chlorine has also been linked to higher instances of bladder cancer (WHO, 2003). On the Environmental Working Group website, you can check out how the water in your area ranks.
Since I would rather not drink water that potentially contains carcinogens, I use the Norwex Water Filtration System.
