I know, it’s 2015… Young women shouldn’t be talking about the “glass ceiling” anymore.
We’ve got successful young women like Marissa Mayer leading Yahoo, and Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook writing the well known book “Lean In.” Opportunities for women are equal to men in 2015, right???
Maybe not. Interestingly (according to Pew Research), 71% of women graduating from high school in 2012 enrolled in college versus just 61% of young men the same age. Young women are taking responsibility and educating themselves. Despite that fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics cited that on average in 2013, women made 82% of the median weekly earnings of male full-time wage and salary workers.
What has your personal experience been?
Have you ever been told that your opportunities were limited because of your age or gender? Have you ever been treated differently than colleagues of equal experience due to your age or gender? Have you ever been denied a wage or had your income cut despite your company doing well? If it hasn’t happened to you, it may have happened to a friend or family member. As women, we tend to hide these things. We may feel that it’s our fault somehow that we’re being treated this way.
I’m here to tell you that it’s NOT your fault, it’s NOT right, and there IS a better way! There are opportunities where you can and will be compensated, rewarded, and recognized for excellent work. There are opportunities where you can have ownership in how you spend your time. You can decide WHEN you work, WHERE you work and WHO you work with. Sound too good to be true?
Starting your own business may be the key to breaking through the glass ceiling and finding the happiness and success you’ve been looking for.
According to Kiplinger, many young women are deciding to ditch corporate life for one in which they make the rules. Are you ready to dip your toe in the water of something like that? Are you ready to jump ALL IN with everything you’ve got? Whether you want to give owning your own business a try or whether you want to commit 100% to it, I would love to coach you on your journey.
